 Structured Cabling

Structured cabling was a new concept as far back as 1981 but took around 5 more years to develop commercially, with Olivetti PDS being the first.

Since the explosion in this medium, it has become the most significant change to the way that communications cables for data networks and telephones are now installed the world over.

By using the concept of a common cable for all data and voice systems terminals, the RJ45 modular jack and outlet have become standard installed items for any new cable installations since the mid 90’s.

The structured cable types and offerings available are as follows:-

Cat 5e -
By far the simplest standard, still widely installed for its ability to transport transmission speeds up to 1Gbps.

Cat 6 -
The premium cable of choice for networks and applications for 1Gbps and above. This is a very good system but needs better consideration for consideration and the installation techniques.

Cat 6A -
Using Augmented Cat 6 or Cat 6A braid shielded/screened pair cable these cable systems are all designed to the standards document ANSI/TIA-568-B.2-10, published recently.

This is currently the best standards based offering in the marketplace to meet your bandwidth hungry ultra fast applications.
Be aware that distance limitations apply to the performance of these systems.

Cat 7 -
This system is for the future and is not ratified to date but remains the ultimate ‘want’ for the bandwidth hungry data centre manager.
